Introduction[editar | editar código]
A spelling bee contest can be a very motivating activity. Spelling in English is essential, since it is not phonetic. Understanding and being able to spell are skills that will help students enhance their knowledge improve the level of mastery in the use of English.

Session 21, Period 1[editar | editar código]
Initial Phase[editar | editar código]
Review the alphabet. Place special emphasis on the vowels. Students are expected to have worked on a Spelling Bee in Primero Básico and Segundo Básico.

Intermediate Phase[editar | editar código]
Have a list of words prepared to spell to students. Spell clearly every word three times. After you have done so, write the word on the board, so students can self-correct.
Do this word by word at first, and then in clusters of 3 or 5 words. Challenge your students accordingly.
Make sure all students understand the rules of a Spelling Bee.
Wrap up[editar | editar código]
Provide students with a list of words that will be part of the Spelling Bee to be held during the last period of this learning session. At home they should practice spelling those words and add 10 words from their surroundings.
Session 21, Period 2[editar | editar código]
Initial Phase[editar | editar código]
Have Students do pair check on homework.
Circulate in the class and facilitate the process. Organize logistics as needed.
Intermediate Phase[editar | editar código]
Provide students with practice for a Spelling Bee. Ask students at random. You can use the attendance list or a random number generator after giving each student a number. Feel free to use your creativity. Silence is essential and demonstrates respect. Say each word out loud or use an electronic reader. Google Translate and other dictionaries have sound producing functions. Follow the Spelling Bee rules.

Have students practice spelling. Use the method that best suits your class.
Session 21, Period 3[editar | editar código]
Initial Phase[editar | editar código]
Organize seating and logistics for the Spelling Bee as most convenient for your classroom. During the first round of the Spelling Bee each student should have a chance to spell a word. The ones who fail are eliminated from the contest.
Intermediate Phase[editar | editar código]
During the second round of the spelling bee winners must compete among themselves.
Wrap up[editar | editar código]
During the third and last round of the Spelling Bee two finalists compete with each other. The winner is the Spelling Bee champion of the class. A diploma signed by the teacher when possible is always welcomed by students. You can also name a second and third place. Adapt to your class environment.
