0:05	Hello and welcome to pronunciation practice.
0:09	My name is Sammy, and I like to learn American English.
0:15	Today, we'll be practicing long and short vowels.
0:21	In American English, there are five vowels
0:24	but each vowel usually has more than one pronunciation.
0:30	Sometimes you have long vowels, and sometimes you have short vowels.
0:36	To get started, pay attention to the following story
0:40	and see if you notice any difference in the sounds of the underlined vowels.
0:48	My friend Pete went to the pet store.
0:53	He wanted to get a cute puppy.
0:58	He did not know that the store only had cats.
1:03	Pete was a little bit scared that a cat might bite him.
1:10	But the cat licked his face, and it changed his mind.
1:15	Then, Pete thought, "Cats are great!"
1:20	Some of the vowels in the story were long vowels
1:25	and some were short vowels.
1:28	Long vowels sound like their name.
1:32	a e i o u
1:37	Sometimes they sound more tensed or exaggerated.
1:43	Repeat after me. A. The word cake has a long "a" in it.
1:51	E. Tree.
1:54	I. Light.
1:57	O. Globe.
2:00	U. Music.
2:03	Next, let's talk about short vowels.
2:07	Short vowels don't sound like their name.
2:11	Instead, they have a softer more relaxed sound.
2:16	like a e i o u.
2:24	Let's practice! A. The word cat has a short "a" in it.
2:31	E. Bell.
2:34	I. Fish.
2:37	O. Dog.
2:40	U. bus.
2:43	Try to practice the long and short vowels in the story.
2:49	For each sentence click pause and think about which underlined word
2:55	has a long vowel and which one has a short vowel.
3:00	Then, try to repeat them yourself.
3:04	My friend Pete went to the pet store.
3:09	He wanted to get a cute puppy.
3:15	He did not know that the store only had cats.
3:22	Pete was a little bit scared that a cat might bite him.
3:30	But the cat licked his face, and it changed his mind.
3:38	Then Pete thought, "Cats are great!"
3:44	So how did you do?
3:46	The blue vowels are long, and the pink vowels are short.
